Chemical waste that has been improperly managed may contaminate water streams. This type of industrial water pollution, which comes with many causes, has both significant and harmful impacts on human and aquatic life. Environmental Compliance Equipment’s (ECE) CLEAR FLOW SYSTEM is designed to treat contaminated water. The Clear Flow system is a fully automated wastewater treatment process utilizing a bentonite based and polymer flocculent to remove solids, oils, inks, paint, dyes, metals, BOD and COD.

“Chemical Waste” is a term that includes dangerous chemical by-products from manufacturing operations and laboratories, as well as smaller scale chemicals discharged from homes and businesses. Most chemical waste can be categorized as hazardous waste depending on the disposal procedure recommended.

Here are Some Examples of Chemical Waste:

Manufacturing or Laboratory By-Products

Solutions and Chemicals for Film Processing

Reagent grade chemicals

Chemically Contaminated Objects – Syringes, Needles, Razors

Chemical Powders

Spent Solvents

Fluids Including: Transmission, Radiator, Brake and Steering Fluids

Dye

Used oil

Asbestos

Sulphur

Mercury

Pesticides

Gas Cylinders

Paint

Electronic Equipment

Ethylene Glycol

Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Degreasing Solvent

Lighting Ballasts

Glues and Adhesives

Resin Including: Epoxy, Styrene

Toner / Print Cartridges

Industrial Cleaning Materials
Household Items:

Cleaning Products

Batteries

Aerosol Cans

Refrigerants

Please note that this is not a definitive list and items may be subject to change. Refer to your Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for proper waste classification.

How Chemical Waste Causes Industrial Water Pollution

Runoff

The production and usage of toxic chemicals is common in manufacturing factories, industrial operations, and construction sites. The chemicals are then exposed to rainwater, causing them to be washed into the soil or directly into lakes, rivers or streams. This is among the biggest causes of industrial water pollution.

Groundwater Contamination

This is water that is located below the Earth’s surface and cannot be seen unless you dig deep enough. Pollutants flow over land and quickly contaminates the water beneath the ground. This groundwater eventually finds its way into rivers, lakes and other valuable water sources.

Illegal Dumping

Waste from homes or industries that has been illegally dumped can cause a serious amount of pollution. This typically happens in places near a water source where people may think the pollution will eventually be washed away, but in reality it has negative consequences for the water source.

Sewerage and Septic Systems

These systems are often not given proper maintenance on a regular basis, which may lead to accidents such as leakage into water supplies. When human waste contaminates a water supply, it can cause dangerous bacteria to spread.

Spills and Leaks

One of the causes of chemical leaks and spills is human error and negligence. Spills and leaks can rapidly make their way to water streams if not taken care of.

Outdated Technology

This is often due to the high cost of newer systems. Modern technologies are not cheap to implement, so most industries forgo improvements and rely on outdated systems which are less advanced and can produce more pollutants.

Lack of Investment

As outlined above, one of the biggest roadblocks for industries to invest in pollution control equipment, management and measures is the cost. It is usually not prioritized because of this.

Industrial Growth

One of the downsides of large-scale growth is that it often leads to disregard for pollution. Resources are focused on supporting a growing economy instead of procurement of enough chemical waste disposal sites and services.

The Damage Caused by Chemical Waste & Pollution

The Ecosystem

When important water resources get contaminated with polluted water, it becomes unsuitable for consumption and other relevant uses. In the developed world, this is a long-lasting problem that is expensive to fix. On the other hand, this can have a detrimental impact on communities in the developing world as getting access to clean drinking water may become a problem.

Thermal Pollution

Thermal pollution occurs when harmful chemicals are deposited at the bottom of a water body. Over time, this can cause significant health risks for nearby people, animals, and marine life. This is especially bad for aquatic and marine life as they are very sensitive to the condition and temperature of water.

Increase in Nutrients

Also referred to as eutrophication, excess nutrients can speed up the growth of algae. Algae blooms reduce the oxygen levels in water and, in turn, cause large-scale algae loss. With lower oxygen levels in the water, its ability to support aquatic life is lessened.

Murky Water

Murky water prevents sunlight from reaching bottom level plants. They can also block fish gills, causing disease and death to aquatic life. Murky water is quite often a warning sign for a more serious problem and doesn’t just mean floating sediments.

Biomagnification

Biomagnification is an issue that can affect humans and other animals higher in the food chain. When the levels of toxic substances increase, it can cause a myriad of health issues that can adversely affect human life. These include headaches, nausea, genetic defects, and much more.

Ensure Safe and Compliant

Disposal of Chemical Waste
It is your responsibility to comply with unsafe chemical waste disposal procedures and avoid environmental consequences and penalties. For important matters such as this, we urge you to use qualified experts.

Industrial water pollution is a widespread problem throughout the planet. When harmful chemicals and compounds are discharged into water, the water becomes unsuitable for drinking and other uses. Although most of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, we can only obtain fresh water from water bodies such as ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, and reservoirs. This means that it’s in our best interest to keep them clean.

We have come a long way since the industrial revolution. Everything from our manufacturing processes, science and technology, to our life in general has significantly changed for the better. However, everything comes with a price. All the advancements and developments made in the past couple of centuries also brought a plethora of problems along with them, including water pollution.

Pollution is the process of contaminating the environment with harmful and waste materials, which bring about a drastic change in the surrounding atmosphere’s quality. Environmental pollution can be classified into the following types: water pollution, air pollution, and noise pollution. Water pollution refers to the release of pollutants into the water, making it unfit for drinking and other purposes. The five main sources of water pollution are domestic sewage, stormwater runoff, industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and wastewater from septic tanks.

Causes of Industrial Water Pollution

Lack of Strict Policies

Many countries in the world suffer from the lack of strict policies to control pollution, especially in countries that are developing or underdeveloped. Although most countries have policies in place, the apathy of the enforcement authorities has enabled industries to bypass such laws easily.

Reliance on Outdated Technologies

Another cause of water pollution is the reliance of some industries on outdated technologies that generate more pollutants compared to modern technologies. What industries do is they forgo upgrades and carry on using outdated technologies to avoid paying for the high cost of modern technologies.

Lack of Capital

It is common practice in many countries to discharge industrial water into rivers or lakes without adequately treating it. This is especially true for smaller industries that lack capital to purchase pollution control equipment.

Unplanned Industrial Growth

Unplanned industrial growth is partly responsible for water pollution. Industrial growth contributes to the positive growth of a country’s economy, but it also adversely affects the environment, especially when it is sudden and unplanned. The growth can also be responsible for the lack of proper waste disposal sites, as well as a complete disregard for pollution control laws.

Extracting from Mines

Industrial water pollution is also caused by the extraction of minerals through mining and drilling, which makes the land unfit for agriculture, and pollutes both surface water and ground water. Any accidental leakage can find its way into the surrounding water and then enter the ocean. Both the land and the sea can be polluted by oil spills. Water can experience an increase in mineral content and a change in its pH level from wastes generated during mining operations.

Effects of Industrial Water Pollution

The wastes generate in numerous industrial processes can cause the following changes when they are introduced into the water bodies.

Effects on the Ecosystem

Industrial water pollution can have radical effects on the ecosystem. In various industrial processes, water is used for many different purposes, and becomes contaminated with heavy metals, toxic chemicals, organic sludge, and even radioactive sludge. When such polluted water is not treated before being thrown into the ocean or other bodies of water, they become unsuitable for any use.

Thermal Pollution

When radioactive sludge is released to the water, it often collects at the bottom of water bodies. Radioactive sludge can remain highly radioactive for decades, posing serious health risks for people living nearby. Thermal pollution is the increase in ambient water temperature. It can cause harm to aquatic or marine life, especially to organisms that are extremely sensitive to slight changes in temperature. Nuclear reactors and power plants are among the biggest sources of thermal pollution.

Effect of Eutrophication

The balance of the ecosystem can be disrupted when the water’s nutrient content goes through changes. For instance, when eutrophication occurs (water’s nutrient content increases), it can promote algal bloom that can cause the oxygen content of water to drop. Though algae produce oxygen during daytime, they use the oxygen dissolved in water at night.

After an algal bloom, what often follows is the death of a large quantity of algae, which are decomposed by bacteria with the help of oxygen. Thus, the entire process depletes the amount of dissolved oxygen in water. In some cases, this process can reduce the oxygen content of water to dangerous levels that render it incapable of supporting aquatic life. Such hypoxic areas of the ocean are known as dead zones.

Increase the Murkiness of Water

The murkiness of water can be increased by industrial wastewater. When water becomes too murky, it prevents sunlight from reaching the bottom. Consequently, bottom-dwelling plants may not be able to photosynthesize. It can also block the gills of fish and make it difficult for them to use dissolved oxygen from the water.

Effect of Chemicals

Asbestos, sulfur, mercury, lead, nitrates, toluene, phosphates, dyes, pesticides, alkalies, acids, benzene, chlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride, polychlorinated biphenyl, volatile organic chemicals, and poisonous solvents – these are the common industrial pollutants that cause water pollution. Chemicals like asbestos is a carcinogen that causes mesothelioma and increases the risk of benign intestinal polyps, while sulfur is detrimental to marine life.

Various fertilizers contain nitrates and phosphates, both of which can amplify the effects of eutrophication, potentially causing the formation of dead zones. On the other hand, drinking water with high levels of carbon tetrachloride can cause problems with the liver. Another industrial pollutant benzene is suspected to be linked with diseases such as low blood platelets and anemia, and an increased risk for cancer.

Chlorobenzene is a chemical that can be found in dyes and insecticides. Meanwhile, toluene is a pollutant produced by the oil and petroleum industry. Both chlorobenzene and toluene can damage the kidneys, liver, and the central nervous system. Volatile organic chemicals are fundamentally solvents used in various household and industrial products. These chemicals can pollute the groundwater when not properly disposed of, and can cause an array of health problems such as nausea, headaches, memory impairment, and liver damage.

Control and Prevention

Although it is a tall order to contain industrial water pollution, it is not impossible. But without the cooperation of citizens and industrial units, reducing water pollution would not be possible. Thus, further awareness needs to be raised among the common masses about how water gets polluted, its effects on the health of living beings, and how it can be prevented.

The establishment and effective implementation of strict pollution control laws and legislations will play a huge role in pollution control. Moreover, the development of cost-effective pollution control equipment, and incentives from the government for using such equipment can encourage industries to be more serious about controlling pollution.

Ordinary wastes, such as domestic sewage, can easily be treated by the municipal system. But some wastes like oil and grease, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds require a more specialized kind of treatment. Industries can separate such dangerous wastes by installing a pre-treatment system. The wastewater that has been partially treated can be sent to the municipal facilities for further purification.

Large-scale industries produce a lot of wastewater. For this reason, they must update their manufacturing processes to reduce the number of pollutants, and setup and operate their own on-site treatment systems. Industrial wastewater treatment can be conducted in three phases: primary treatment involving mechanical processes, secondary treatment through biological processes, and tertiary treatment by physical, chemical and biological processes.

In primary treatment, pollutants are removed from water by screening, grinding, flocculation, and sedimentation processes. In secondary treatment, wastewater treatment is done with the help of biological methods. Lastly, the wastewater goes through tertiary treatment where it gets recycled using physical, chemical and biological processes. On the other hand, thermal pollution can be controlled by installing cooling towers, or by setting up cooling ponds.

In the United States alone, more than half of the total water pollution is caused by the industries. In the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 1996 National Water Quality Inventory, the US EPA reported to the Congress that approximately 40% of the surveyed estuaries, lakers and rivers were too polluted for fishing, drinking, and swimming. In an effort to curb the water pollution problem, the United States introduced various legislations, including the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act (1972), the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (Clean Water Act of 1972), and the Safe Drinking Water Act (1974). In 1988, the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act was also amended. The most significant prerequisites for the success of such legislations are the cooperation of citizens and industrial units, proper enforcement of laws and regulations, and the availability of efficient and cheaper pollution control techniques.

The Problem: A waste hauling company takes pride in ensuring the collection trucks are clean and presentable to their clients, you, and I. Each day, every truck is washed to remove the day’s accumulation of road film, oil, and grease, some fluids from the collection, and landfill solids. The company needed a system that could remove the contaminants and purify the water to a level safe for discharge to the POTW. The system discharge is tested quarterly to meet discharge Regulation

The Answer: The ClearFlow CF-200 system was installed. The system is set up to automatically treat the wastewater as it is being generated and pumped from an in-ground separator tank in the wash rack area. The system was installed in its own treatment room next to the wash rack. A service program was initiated with the company that provides the required maintenance the systems need without using company personnel. The system has been providing a quality discharge and reliable operation.

Cleanings are constant throughout the week and on the weekend the entire plant is cleaned and sanitized. These cleaning evolutions generate a volume of wastewater that is loaded with FOG ( Fats, Oils, and Grease) and Suspended Solids.
Answer: The ClearFlow CF-400 has been applied to pre-treat the generated waste stream providing clean, clear water. The waste flow from the plant is pumped from an in-ground separator and directed to a screen filter to remove large particles such as chip pieces and other objects. The waste is then directed to two 4500 gallon EQ tanks. The CF 400 pulls wastewater from the EQ tanks and processes it removing the TSS and FOG down to minimal levels and even to a non-detect level. The installation of the CF 400 has provided the company with a reliable process that is compact and easy to operate. The system has provided the local POTW with a high quality of discharge they never expected from this facility.

The Answer: The ClearFlow CF-400 has been applied to pre-treat the generated waste stream providing clean, clear water. A secondary process consisting of a 240 g/hr corona discharge ozone circulation loop reduces the dissolved organics present in the effluent from the CF unit. A tertiary filtration consisting of two # 2 100 micron bag filters completes the treatment scenario allowing them to reuse the wash water. Prior to installation of the system they would haul up to 6,000 gallons of wastewater a day. Significant savings are realized.

The Problem: A Pipe Machining company manufactures a drilling pipe at its TX facility. Manufacturing consists of taking raw pipe and milling threads and/or attaching couplings to the ends of the pipe of various diameters. In this process, two main waste streams are generated. First is a coolant waste generated in the CNC machines that mill the threads and the second waste stream is phosphate wash water which is the highest volume waste generated.

The Answer: The ClearFlow CF-200 has been applied to pre-treat the generated waste stream by taking the waste phosphate wash and adding a smaller amount of the coolant waste combined and treating providing clean, clear water. A secondary process consisting of a 10 g/hr corona discharge ozone circulation loop that reduces the dissolved organics present in the effluent from the CF unit. The resulting treated water is discharged. Prior to installing this system, the company was hauling this waste water from its facility at a high cost per gallon.

The Problem: This oil exploratory company generates wastewater in the process of cleaning oilfield tools used on offshore oil rigs. The tools are loaded with oil, solids, salts, and a variety of chemicals and metals. The tools are washed using a pressure washer then the water is collected and sent to the system for treatment through various ECE products and then the cleaned water is reused in the washing process. The company benefits from the process of maintaining a closed-loop process where minimal wastewater exits the facility.

The Answer: The wastewater is first treated using ECE’s DRLC OWS to remove free oils and solids. The water is sent to a Pre Tank where the ClearFlow CF 400 takes on 400-gallon batches and removes emulsified oils, solids, and metals. The effluent from the CF 400 is sent to a holding tank where ECE’s WR3 Multi-Media and UV System provides a tertiary final polish and sterilization of the water for reuse in the washing process.

The Problem: In the manufacturing of cardboard boxes, ink is used to print a client’s information on the container. During the change-outs of the printing press, the ink is washed off the printing roller to ready the process for the next client’s container. This washing generates a waste ink high in solids that in order to discharge the box manufacturer has paid excessive discharge fees to the SA Water Board.

The Answer: The ClearFlow 600 has been installed to remove the suspended solids from the stream reducing the cost to discharge to the SA Water Board. The ClearFlow 600 processes up to 1200 gallons per hour of the high solids waste ink generating the clear water discharge shown here in the photo of the effluent being filtered by the CF-600’s SS Belt Filter. The sludge generated passes a TCLP for non-haz disposal. The ClearFlow 600 continually provides this quality of water. Fully Automatic.

The Problem: The company manufactures various types of fasteners for the aerospace industry. In the process of manufacturing, several waste streams are generated that contain oil, various metals, and solids. In order to save operating costs in the form of hauling charges, The company needed a way to treat the waste streams to allow for discharge to the local POTW. They also required to treat two separate waste streams individually using one system. The ECE ClearFlow System was selected.

The Answer: The ClearFlow CF-200 has been applied to treat the generated waste stream providing clean, clear discharge water. The CF-200 installed at the company is programmed to perform two independent treatment processes in order to keep the waste streams separated as requested by them. The system treats the oily wastewater as the main waste and then when available, will switch programs and valve positions to treat cyanide waste independently and automatically. All contaminants are removed for safe POTW disposal.
